Current status

Start here

Will JESTA apply to you?

JESTA is expected to apply mainly to certain travelers visiting Japan for a short-term stay under visa exemption arrangements. The passport used for travel, purpose of visit and intended period of stay will matter when the final rules are published.

Practical guidance

Details we are tracking

These practical points will be updated as official operating rules are released.

Application timing

When should you apply for JESTA?

Japan has not announced the application opening date, recommended lead time or standard processing time. Until those rules are published, no website can responsibly promise a specific number of hours or days.

Now

Prepare, but do not submit

Check passport validity, confirm that personal details are consistent and monitor official announcements. Applications are not currently open.

Before booking deadlines

Allow time for review

Once official guidance is available, plan around its recommended lead time rather than applying immediately before departure.

After a passport change

Recheck the authorization record

Electronic travel authorizations are normally linked to passport details. JESTA's final renewal and passport-change rules are still pending.

Do not apply on this preview site. It does not accept applications, passport data or payment. A live government application URL will be shown only after it is officially announced and verified.

Costs and payment

JESTA fees and payment methods

The official government fee, payment methods, refund conditions and any exemptions have not been announced. Published figures should be treated as unconfirmed unless they come from the Japanese government.

Government fee To be announced

The amount charged by the official JESTA system, if a fee is required.

Third-party service charge Must be shown separately

A private support provider may add its own charge. It is not the government fee and should be clearly identified before payment.

Payment and refunds Rules not yet published

Accepted cards, payment timing, failed payments and refund eligibility remain pending.

Step-by-step

How the JESTA application process is expected to work

This planning flow separates what travelers can prepare now from the submission and review steps that will become available after launch.

  1. 01

Check whether JESTA may be needed

Review your passport, purpose of travel, planned length of stay and whether you would normally travel under a visa-exemption arrangement.

  2. 02

Prepare one record for each traveler

Collect the passport and applicant details required for every adult and child. A family trip does not remove the need for individual traveler records.

  3. 03

Use the official portal when announced

Submit only through the Japanese government channel or another service you have deliberately chosen after checking its operator and charges.

  4. 04

Review entries and pay the stated fee

Confirm spellings, passport numbers and declarations before payment. The official fee and available payment methods remain unannounced.

  5. 05

Keep the result with your travel records

Monitor the email address used in the application and respond to any request for further information. A travel authorization would not guarantee admission to Japan.

After submission

Review, refusal and reapplication

Final result labels, processing stages and review procedures have not been released. Travelers should expect that an application may require further action and should keep the submitted record available.

01

Pending or further review

Monitor the email and reference number used for the application. Respond only through a verified channel.

02

Approved

Check that the passport details match. Authorization would permit travel to be requested, but border officers retain the final entry decision.

03

Incorrect information

Do not assume every field can be edited after submission. Official correction and new-application rules must be followed.

04

Refused or not authorized

Read the stated reason and official next-step instructions. Reapplication, visa application or another route may be required depending on the case.

Special travel cases

Transit, cruises, children and assisted applications

These situations often need separate operational rules. They are tracked here as application questions and will be updated without duplicating the general entry-system coverage on the JESTA information site.

Transit

Airside and landside connections

Whether authorization is required may depend on entering Japan during the connection. Final transit rules have not yet been published.

Cruise

Ports, shore visits and crew

Cruise passengers and crew should wait for rules covering arrival at Japanese ports, shore leave and repeated port calls.

Family

Children and guardians

Plan for an individual traveler record for each child. Final rules for parents, guardians and representative applications remain pending.

Third party

Group or assisted applications

If another person submits information, check consent, contact-email control, service charges and who receives the decision.

Application FAQ

Before you rely on an application website

Can I submit a JESTA application now?

No. The official application portal and opening date have not been announced. This site is an independent information preview and does not collect applicant data.

How much will JESTA cost?

The government fee has not been announced. Check whether any displayed total includes a separate private service charge before making a future payment.

Will children need their own application?

Final rules are pending. Travelers should plan to prepare passport details for every child and confirm how a parent or guardian may submit on their behalf.

Does approval guarantee admission to Japan?

No. A travel authorization would not replace the landing examination on arrival. Travelers must still meet Japan's requirements for landing, and the immigration authorities make the final decision on permission to land.
